The KIFIFE’s selection, including documentaries, fiction, short films and animations, is based on African children and teenagers as protagonist or directors, aiming at showing their everyday reality.

SÖODO

France, Burkina Faso | 2015 | documentary | 11 min | Mooré and French | subtitles French

Near a baobab, a group of children prepares to play Söodo (sorcerer or sorceress in Mooré language). A child draws a spiral whose center must be reached as quickly as possible. The last to arrive becomes a wizard. By a frantic chase, he must catch another child and pass on his gray-gray. He becomes a wizard in his turn. The goal of the game is not to be a wizard at sunset.

Michel K. Zongo was born in 1974 in Koudougou, Burkina Faso. From 2003 to 2008, he worked for Cinomade, an association based in Burkina Faso whose objective is to create and distribute tools to increase political awareness, notably through cinema. “La sirène de Faso Fani” is his second feature-length film.

Somewhere in the desert Fadimata Wallett Oumar, Tuareg poet from Timbuktu, pitches her tent. She sings of her longing for her desert childhood and its beauty. A group of children prepare to play a game which involves a goatherd and his goats, a jackal and a judge.

Nirin

Switzerland | 2015 | fiction | 16 min | Malagassy | subtitles French

Nirin is 6. It’s the first time he’s leaving his native village in Madagascar. Accompanied by his mother and his two younger brothers, they cross the country on a bush-taxi. Their mother promised them they would go on a lovely long trip and Nirin is eagerly looking forward to discovering his country. However, this great journey doesn’t turn out the way Nirin imagined it.

Director and editor

Born on July 6th 1986 in Madagascar and Swiss by adoption, Josua Hotz has lived in Neuchâtel since 1995 where he went to school. Fascinated by video and new technologies, he has studied at ERACOM (School of Arts and Communication, Lausanne). In 2010, he started film studies at ECAL in Lausanne, graduating with honors in 2015. His short film Nirin (2015) is based on his personal story.
