Guled and Nasra are a loving couple living in the slums of Djibouti with their son Mahad. However, the balance of their family is threatened: Nasra suffers from a serious kidney disease and needs urgent surgery. The operation is expensive and Guled is already working as a gravedigger to make ends meet: how can he raise the money to save Nasra and keep the family together?

Khadar Ayderus Ahmed

Finnish writer-director Khadar Ayderus Ahmed was born in Mogadishu 40 years ago. He has directed several successful short films, such as the highly acclaimed The Night Thief in 2017. He has already had a notable career as a screenwriter, having written the feature-length drama Unexpected Journey (with director Samuli Valkama, 2017) and the Locarno and Angers award-winning short Citizens (directed by Juho Kuosmanen, 2008). The Gravedigger’s Wife is his first feature film. He has since collaborated on the series Zone B.
